Dagens vits fra Reuter

Charlton Heston in a tender moment

MADRID (Reuters) – Spain’s parliament voiced its support on Wednesday for the rights of great apes to life and freedom in what will apparently be the first time any national legislature has called for such rights for non-humans.

Parliament’s environmental committee approved resolutions urging Spain to comply with the Great Apes Project, devised by scientists and philosophers (men hvilke “scientists” og “philosophers”? Det fremgår ikke af GAP’s side – hmmm…) who say our closest genetic relatives deserve rights hitherto limited to humans.

“This is a historic day in the struggle for animal rights and in defense of our evolutionary comrades, which will doubtless go down in the history of humanity,” said Pedro Pozas, Spanish director of the Great Apes Project.

Man tror det er løgn. Intet kan snart længere forbavse – tror man – indtil noget endnu mere vanvittigt dukker op.

Brussels Journal har denne kommentar (APE=L’Association Parlementaire Européenne):

But, but maybe this is just an attempt to allow European Parliamentarians some form of human dignity. Their own trade association can be found here ape-europe.eu.

His name is Matthew, he is 26 years old, and his supporters hope to take his case to the European Court of Human Rights.

But he won’t be able to give evidence on his own behalf  –  since he is a chimpanzee.

Animal rights activists led by British teacher Paula Stibbe (link til fænomenets blog) are fighting to have Matthew legally declared a ‘person’ so she can be appointed as his guardian if the bankrupt animal sanctuary where he lives in Vienna is forced to close.

… now 36-year-old Miss Stibbe and the Vienna-based Association Against Animal Factories have filed an appeal with the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

HUMAN rights, not SIMIAN, blockhead! Implementeringen af Menneskerettighederne er jo en farce!

She insists that the chimp needs legal standing so a guardian can be appointed to look out for his interests  –  especially if the sanctuary shuts down.

Miss Stibbe, who is from Brighton but has lived in Vienna for several years, says she is not trying to get the chimp declared a human, just a person.

‘Everybody who knows him personally will see him as a person,’ she said.

  2. Über-aber. Kein aber dabei.🙂
