Ulighed?

Tillad mig endnu en gang at vende tilbage til Eric Hoffer: “We clamor for equality chiefly in matters in which we ourselves cannot hope to attain excellence. To discover what a man truly craves but knows he cannot have we must find the field in which he advocates absolute equality. By this test Communists are frustrated Capitalists.”

Amerikanerne er vist nogle værre hajer

allegedussharkattackreuters.jpgIrakisk fiskare fick haj i nätet

This is a jolly little puff piece which is not typical of the Scotsman, however the comments are worthy of note.
The account of Khalid’s discovery (of coffee, or coffee eating goats) is just one of a glittering treasury of untold tales from a golden age of discovery and innovation, which took place in the Islamic world between the seventh and 17th centuries.

It is this hidden history that a new exhibition aims to unveil. Entitled 1,001 Inventions, the exhibition opens at Glasgow Science Centre later this month and charts the innovations of exceptional scholars, and ordinary people, from the Islamic world who discovered and developed many items that are taken for granted today. The exhibits are divided into seven zones: home, hospital, market, school, town, universe and world.

Professor Salim Al-Hassani, chairman of the Foundation for Science Technology and Civilisation, creators of 1,001 Inventions, said there is a widespread misconception that science and technology withered during the “Dark Ages”.

“The 1,001 Inventions exhibition aims, through a process of education and learning, to challenge this myth and celebrate the fact that Muslim civilisation was flourishing and contributed to the advancement of our society today,” he said.

So we owe the muslim’s for civilization?

Let’s see: stealing, reprinting and renaming, acquiring without permission and claiming invention, etc. A wonderful culture… current behavior bombs for children and woman, beheading girls for going to school, yes a peaceful, loving culture, interested in human advancement. May history return them to where they came from…MRD

* Muslims are particularly zealous in their steady exaggeration of supposedly Muslim inventions and advancements. The Hindu “zero” which was transmitted to the Islamic world, just as paper-making came to Damascus from China, has long been claimed for the Arabs and Islam. Similarly, the most famous Arabic-using mathematician, the polymath Al-Khwarizmi, is put forth as some kind of representative for Islam, when his own history suggests a lone and unorthodox wolf, in the tradition of al-Rhazi .

My own thought it that once one has thrown out all those who, though they are known by their Arabic names, were in fact Christians or Jews, and once one has determined that the Muslim figures who remain were only one or two or at most three generations away from their non-Muslim ancestors, one begins to suspect that “Islamic” science disappeared because the non-Muslims ceased to be an important part of the population, had been sufficiently reduced in numbers or otherwise marginalized so that the spirit of Islam — a spirit most inimical to free and skeptical inquiry about everything, including what Newton and other scientists in Christendom saw as the laws of Nature that could be determined, for God himself had set the clockwork mechanism in motion, and Man could determine the laws according to which that mechanism functioned, while in Islam, Allah obeys no laws, but is whimsical, does just what he likes, and submissive man must be a slave to Allah, and question nothing, wonder quizzically about nothing, investigate nothing, for Allah knows best.

People raised to believe that kind of thing, existing in societies where everyone believes or must pretend to believe that kind of thing, may manage to engage in that bastard-child of science called weapons technology, but that is acceptable because those weapons will help Islam to overcome the Infidels. What is inadmissible is for Muslims to study the nature of DNA, or subatomic particles. Some born into Islam may do so — but in so doing, they are showing that they are not true Believers.

Den enlige moder (snøft) igen igen

mette_frederiksen_lykketoft.jpg Dagens kommentator: Mette Frederiksen (Soc.Dem.)

Scientist commits heresy

Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence. – John Adams

I almost spilled my coffee. I just stood there, dumbstruck right in my own kitchen. Flipping through the Wall Street Journal the other morning while waiting for the oatmeal to cool, my eye was caught by an article I had to read all the way through – then and there. It was the text of an interview with the latest Nobel Prize laureate. No, not the one named Al Gore.

Few may have noticed, but Mr. Gore shared this year’s Nobel Peace Prize with a real scientist, or rather a whole slew of them on the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. That group’s work is as unglamorous as its bureaucratic name. It’s never even made a horror film (GLOBAL WARNING!) about the earth’s being inundated as the polar icecaps melt.

This international panel just plods along trying to find out what’s really going on with the climate. Facts are stubborn things, as dour John Adams once noted, and it takes a lot of patient research to find and evaluate them, then suggest an appropriate response. It’s about as exciting as bookkeeping.

Being an alarmist is a lot easier; some politicians and pamphleteers make highly successful careers of it. Real scientists may not be pleased by the sensationalism that envelops the whole subject of global warming. But if they speak up, they could be labeled heretics and exiled to the farthest reaches of academic opprobrium. For global warming has become more of a fighting faith than a topic for calm analysis. Disagree and you’re liable to be called not just wrong but anti-science. Today it is the ultimate heresy.

One of the scientific dissenters is John Christy, a member of both the UN panel and the University of Alabama’s faculty. (He’s the director of that university’s Earth System Science Center.) In a break with tradition, Dr. Christy declined to perform the traditional pas de deux of mutual flattery when Nobel laureates share the same prize. Not when Al Gore’s may be the first on record awarded essentially for the kind of PR that comes too close to being propaganda. It makes you wonder what propagandist will get it next year – Michael Moore?

It turns out there are indeed reasonable things to be said about global warming – and on television at that. I was amazed. The transcript of Dr. Christy’s interview with CNN’s Miles O’Brien is worth reading: (Just set down your coffee cup first.)

Altruism and Selfishness

THE FIRST PIECE OF MORAL advice that parents used to give their children was contained in the Golden Rule: Do as you would be done by. Christian parents backed this up with the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jewish parents with the commandment to “love thy neighbor as thyself,” enlightened parents with their own version of the Categorical Imperative. It all seemed very simple. After all, what is morality about if it is not about living with others? And how can you live with others if you don’t treat them as equals?

Two powerful influences have disturbed that old equilibrium. The first is the gospel of selfishness, preached by Ayn Rand. Don’t listen to that socialist claptrap, Rand told us. It is just a ploy of the parasitical, to curtail the freedom of the heroes, and to seize their goods. Rand’s fiery mixture of free market economics and Nietzschean defiance proved intoxicating to a generation struggling to come to terms with the New Deal and the growth of the welfare state. By announcing “the virtue of selfishness,” she reminded her readers that creation comes before distribution, and that creation needs a motive. And what motive will drive people to take the risks required by wealth creation, unless it be self-interest?

Villy “Fort Bragg” for fuld udblæsning

Hvilke forudsætninger har du dog for at vurdere, hvilke problemer denne mor og andre i samme situation måtte have ud over ledigheden?
